The Importance of Montessori Accreditation

What Is Accreditation in Montessori Education?

Accreditation is more than just a stamp of approval — it’s an official recognition that a school upholds the highest standards of Montessori education. Through accreditation, a Montessori school demonstrates that it faithfully follows the Montessori philosophy, maintains consistent classroom practices, and provides an authentic learning environment for children.

The accreditation process involves a thorough external review and evaluation conducted by recognized national or international Montessori organizations. This process ensures that every aspect of the school — from the prepared environment and curriculum to teacher qualifications and administrative practices — reflects the integrity and principles of true Montessori education.

Ultimately, accreditation is a mark of excellence, providing reassurance to families and the community that the school operates with transparency, accountability, and dedication to Montessori ideals.

The Benefits of Montessori School Accreditation

Choosing an accredited Montessori school offers families peace of mind and educators a strong foundation for professional growth. Accreditation provides a range of benefits for the entire school community, including:

Commitment to Authentic Montessori Education: Accreditation confirms that the school adheres to Montessori philosophy and methodology in its purest form.

Trust and Credibility: Families can trust that their children are receiving a genuine Montessori experience, grounded in best practices and continuous improvement.

Quality and Consistency: Accreditation ensures that classrooms across the school maintain consistent standards and a unified approach to teaching and learning.

Professional Development: The accreditation process encourages staff to engage in ongoing training, reflection, and growth.

Enhanced Reputation: Accredited schools gain recognition and visibility within the Montessori community, such as through Montessori Canada.

Improved Student Outcomes: By staying true to Montessori principles, accredited schools help students develop independence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.

Accreditation isn’t just about meeting standards — it’s about nurturing a culture of excellence that benefits every child, family, and educator involved.

Why Qualified & Accredited Teachers Matter

Teachers are the heart of every Montessori environment. Their role goes far beyond instruction — they serve as guides, observers, and facilitators of each child’s natural development. For this reason, teacher training and accreditation are crucial to maintaining the authenticity and effectiveness of Montessori education.

Accredited Montessori teachers are those who have completed rigorous, hands-on training through recognized organizations such as the Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (MACTE) or the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI). These programs prepare educators to understand child development deeply, use Montessori materials with precision, and foster independence and confidence in every learner.

           MACTE- or AMI-accredited teachers:

Possess a profound understanding of early childhood development.

Employ authentic Montessori materials with intention and skill.

Guide children toward independence and self-discipline through respectful observation.

Uphold the ethical and professional standards that define Montessori education.

The Benefits of Employing MACTE or AMI Certified Teachers

Hiring qualified, accredited Montessori teachers is one of the most effective ways a school can ensure educational excellence. The benefits extend across all levels of the school community:

High-Quality Instruction: Certified teachers deliver lessons aligned with Montessori principles, ensuring authenticity in practice.

Classroom Consistency: Students experience a cohesive learning journey across different age levels and classrooms.

Parent Confidence: Families trust that their children are guided by skilled professionals who understand and apply the Montessori approach with fidelity.

Professional Growth: Accredited teachers are committed to lifelong learning, reflective practice, and ongoing professional development.

Accreditation Eligibility: Employing MACTE- or AMI-certified teachers supports the school’s authentic programming accreditation through Montessori Canada/ or another recognized institution.

In essence, accredited teachers bring the Montessori philosophy to life. They ensure that each child experiences the true essence of Montessori — an education that nurtures curiosity, independence, and a lifelong love for learning.

           The Three-Period Lesson

            First Period

Point to each type of tree in the photographs and tell the student its name. “This is a Maple. This is a White Oak. This is a Poplar.” Allow the student to examine the leaves of each tree and ask them to share their thoughts on the leaves and their differences.

            Second Period

Give the student the labels and allow them to place the labels with the corresponding tree. If the student does not point to the proper parts of the flower, allow them to continue exploring the flower, smile at them, and end the lesson when appropriate. The lesson may be repeated at another time if the child shows interest.

            Third Period

Ask the student, “What type of tree is this?” and point to one of the trees. Continue with each tree. If the child does not respond with the right answer, smile, and end the activity when they are ready to move on.

The Montessori Birthday Walk: A Special Casa Classroom Tradition

In Montessori schools, birthdays hold a special significance, celebrated in a unique and meaningful way through the Birthday Walk. This tradition, rooted in the Montessori philosophy, is not just about marking a child’s birth but also about recognizing their growth, development, and the passage of time. The Birthday Walk allows children to reflect on their personal journey while reinforcing the sense of community within the classroom.

           Understanding the Montessori Birthday Walk

The Birthday Walk is a cherished ritual in Montessori Casa classrooms, where children aged 2.5 to 6 years are invited to celebrate their birthday in a way that connects them with the natural cycles of life, particularly Earth’s journey around the Sun. This celebration aligns with the broader Montessori cosmic education, helping children understand their place in the universe and the rhythms of life.

By participating in the Birthday Walk, children develop a deeper understanding of time and their own growth. This hands-on activity offers even the youngest learners a symbolic experience of the passing of years, fostering a sense of wonder and curiosity about the world around them.

The Process of the Birthday Walk

The celebration begins with the teacher preparing the classroom for the event. A candle, symbolizing the Sun, is placed in the center of the room, with the children forming a circle around it, representing Earth’s orbit. The birthday child holds a small globe and walks around the "Sun," with each lap symbolizing one year of their life.

Here is how a typical Montessori Birthday Walk unfolds:

           1.	Setting the Scene

The teacher lights a candle in the center of the circle, representing the Sun. The birthday child stands beside it, holding a globe to represent Earth, ready to begin their journey around the Sun. This ritual symbolizes the natural rhythm of life, emphasizing the cyclical nature of time.

           2.	Telling the Child’s Story

As the child completes their first lap around the candle (representing their first year of life), the teacher, or sometimes a parent, shares significant milestones from that year—perhaps the child’s birth, first words, or first steps. Photos or special mementos from each year may be displayed to highlight these moments.

For example, as the child completes their first lap, the teacher might say, “When you were one year old, you learned to walk!” As they continue to walk for each subsequent year of their life, similar milestones are shared. This allows both the birthday child and their classmates to reflect on the passage of time and the child’s unique journey.

           3.	Celebrating the Present

Once the child has completed the appropriate number of laps (one for each year of their life), the class often sings a birthday song, and the child blows out the candle, signifying the end of the ceremony. Some classrooms may extend the celebration with additional activities such as sharing treats, singing songs, or making birthday wishes, in alignment with Montessori guidelines.

           4.	A Shared Celebration

The Birthday Walk is not just about the individual child; it’s a celebration for the whole class. The Montessori principle of community is reinforced as classmates gather to honor their peer’s journey. Children may share kind words or fond memories of the birthday child, fostering a spirit of respect, connection, and appreciation.

           Educational and Developmental Benefits

The Montessori Birthday Walk is more than just a celebration. It offers significant educational and developmental benefits that align with the Montessori approach to holistic child development:

           1.	Learning the Concept of Time

For children in the Casa years, time is still an abstract concept. The Birthday Walk provides a tangible way for them to grasp the passage of years, using the Earth’s orbit around the Sun as a concrete symbol of time’s flow.

           2.	Encouraging Self-Reflection

The Birthday Walk gives children the opportunity to reflect on their personal growth and development. By looking back on their milestones, children build self-awareness and begin to understand the uniqueness of their individual journey.

           3.	Fostering Gratitude and Connection

The ritual deepens the connection between the child and their family, as parents or teachers share stories from the early years. It also fosters gratitude for the support system around the child and emphasizes the role of family and community in their development.

           4.	Strengthening Classroom Bonds

Since the entire class participates in the celebration, it strengthens bonds among peers. The Birthday Walk creates a shared experience, helping children celebrate each other’s milestones and reinforcing the values of empathy, respect, and community.

           Personalizing the Celebration

While the Birthday Walk follows a general structure, Montessori classrooms often tailor the celebration to make it more personal and meaningful. Teachers may incorporate music, poetry, or even art projects into the ceremony. Some classrooms invite parents to join in the storytelling, bringing special items or family photos to share. This flexibility allows the Birthday Walk to be a unique and individualized experience for each child, honoring their personal journey and enhancing their connection to the classroom community.

           Conclusion

The Montessori Birthday Walk is a profound and symbolic tradition that goes far beyond a typical birthday party. It celebrates the child’s growth and development, fosters a sense of time and self-reflection, and strengthens the bonds within the classroom. Rooted in Montessori’s principles of respect, empathy, and community, this tradition allows children to appreciate their own journey while feeling connected to the world around them.

Through this beautiful ceremony, children not only celebrate their birthday but also experience a deeper connection to the natural cycles of life, their peers, and the greater community—a truly special and meaningful way to honor the passage of time.

How to Continue Montessori Influence at Home?

What can you do at home?

How can you help your child at home – Montessori perspective and philosophy?

Montessori education is not merely a classroom approach—it’s a comprehensive philosophy that embraces a child’s natural desire for independence, curiosity, and a lifelong passion for learning. It emphasizes the importance of nurturing the whole child—intellectually, emotionally, and physically. As parents, you play a crucial role in supporting your child’s overall development by creating an environment that reflects these values, empowering your child to grow confidently and independently. By doing so, you can support your child’s overall development in a thoughtful and balanced way. Here are some practical ways to bring Montessori’s perspective and philosophy into your home to help your child thrive:

           Create a Prepared Environment

A core principle of the Montessori approach is the concept of the prepared environment—a thoughtfully arranged space that promotes independence and encourages self-directed learning. Applying this principle at home involves creating an environment where your child can explore, learn, and engage with minimal adult intervention. Here’s how you can implement this idea effectively:

           	Child-sized furniture

           	Organized materials

           	Practical life stations

           Encourage Independence

           	Prepare meals

           	Dress themselves

           Foster Freedom with Responsibility

Montessori education emphasizes the concept of freedom within limits, where children are encouraged to make choices while also learning about the responsibilities associated with those choices. Implementing this approach at home involves:

           	Offering Choices

           	Setting Clear Boundaries

           	Teaching Natural Consequences

           Promote Hands-On Learning

Montessori education emphasizes learning through doing. Children engage deeply when they use their hands and senses to explore the world. You can create a rich, hands-on learning environment at home by:

           	Using real tools

           	Exploring nature

           Model Respect and Grace

Montessori classrooms emphasize respect for the child, others, and the environment. You can extend this philosophy at home by modeling respectful behavior:

           	Used kind language

           	Respect their work

           	Teach grace and courtesy

           Observe and Support, Don’t Interfere

Montessori teachers observe children closely to understand their needs and support their development without unnecessary interference. At home, practice the art of observation:

           	Step back if possible

           	Encourage self directed play

           	Watch for developmental interests

           Cultivate a Love of Learning

The Montessori approach is all about nurturing a lifelong love of learning. Encourage this at home by

           	Reading together

	Empower and follow their curiosity

	Celebrate their effort, not just success

           Final Thoughts

Helping your child at home through the Montessori lens is about fostering independence, creating a prepared environment, and respecting their natural desire to learn and explore. Definitely by incorporating Montessori principles into everyday life, you provide your child with the right tools and space to develop into a confident, capable, and self-motivated learner/human being.

Each small step you take to incorporate these ideas helps build a foundation that nurtures their potential in the most holistic and child-centered way possible.

Refrain from saying, "Good Job."

Why don't we say, "good job?"

Why not to say "Good Job" in Montessori?

In Montessori education, the phrase "good job” is deliberately avoided because it can create a dependence on external validation, potentially undermining the development of a child's intrinsic motivation. The Montessori philosophy prioritizes helping children find internal satisfaction and confidence in their own abilities, guiding them to become self-directed learners. This approach is grounded in several key principles:

           Encouraging Intrinsic Motivation:

Instead of emphasizing external praise, Montessori education centers on cultivating a child’s capacity to experience joy and satisfaction through their own efforts and achievements. This approach encourages children to engage in self-reflection, allowing them to independently assess their progress and accomplishments. By doing so, they develop a strong internal motivation to learn, grow, and take pride in their successes.

Montessori educators guide children to recognize the value of their hard work, perseverance, and problem-solving, helping them understand that personal growth comes from within. This internal sense of achievement fuels their desire to improve and master new skills, not for the purpose of receiving approval or rewards from others, but for the genuine satisfaction of overcoming challenges and expanding their knowledge.

As this intrinsic motivation is nurtured, it lays the groundwork for lifelong learning. Children learn to set goals and pursue them out of curiosity and the drive for personal mastery. This approach fosters resilience, as children are empowered to continue exploring and pushing their boundaries without the need for external validation. Ultimately, they come to value the learning process itself, building the foundation for self-directed learning and a deep, lasting love of discovery and growth.

           Building Independence and Self-Evaluation:

By avoiding phrases like "good job," Montessori educators focus on fostering a child's ability to evaluate their own work and make independent choices. This method encourages critical thinking and self-reflection, empowering children to assess their progress according to their own internal standards rather than seeking external validation. As a result, children gain confidence in their problem-solving abilities, develop resilience in facing challenges, and learn to trust their judgment. This ultimately nurtures a strong sense of autonomy and independence.

           Supporting Unconditional Self-Worth:

Saying "good job" can inadvertently imply that a child's worth is tied to certain actions, outcomes, or behaviors. In contrast, Montessori education embraces the whole child and values all efforts equally, regardless of whether they meet traditional standards. By shifting the focus away from outcomes, Montessori creates an environment where children feel secure to take risks, explore new ideas, and try without fear of judgment. This fosters a mindset where a child's self-worth is rooted in their own growth and self-expression, rather than relying on external validation.

           Focusing on the Learning Process:

In Montessori classrooms, the emphasis is on recognizing the effort, persistence, and thoughtfulness behind a child's work, rather than merely the final result. Montessori educators highlight the process—such as a child’s focus, problem-solving abilities, and perseverance—helping them understand that the value of learning lies in the journey itself. This approach teaches children to appreciate the effort they invest and to view mistakes as opportunities for growth, rather than obstacles to success.

           Providing Specific and Constructive Feedback:

Rather than offering generic praise like "good job," Montessori educators provide specific, personalized feedback that highlights a child’s individual actions and efforts. For instance, a teacher might say, "You were very careful while working on that puzzle," or "I notice you used many different colors in your drawing." This kind of feedback encourages children to engage in self-assessment and reflection on their learning experiences, fostering a sense of pride in their work and reinforcing the link between their efforts and accomplishments.

Creating a Lifelong Love of Learning:

By emphasizing self-motivation, independence, and thoughtful feedback, Montessori educators support children in cultivating a strong sense of self-awareness and confidence in their abilities. This approach inspires a genuine love of learning fueled by curiosity, personal growth, and the joy of discovery, rather than a desire for external validation. Children learn to welcome challenges, recognize their own progress, and develop the skills needed to approach life with confidence and resilience.

Through this method, Montessori empowers children to become motivated, independent thinkers who appreciate the learning process and find fulfillment from within.

           REAL LIFE EXPERIENCES!

Why Montessori Education Supports Real-World Experience?

Montessori education is built on the belief that children learn best through direct engagement with the world around them. Developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, this approach prioritizes hands-on, experiential learning, encouraging children to explore independently while fostering a deep connection to their natural and social environments. By immersing children in real-world activities and nurturing their sense of independence, Montessori education equips them with essential life skills and a solid understanding of how the world functions.

At the heart of Montessori education is the idea that learning is an active, participatory process. Instead of passively receiving information, children are encouraged to explore and discover through practical, real-world experiences that resemble the tasks and challenges they will encounter outside the classroom. Whether preparing their own snacks, caring for plants, or engaging with educational materials that illustrate abstract ideas, Montessori students continuously relate their learning to the world they inhabit.

This child-centered, dynamic approach promotes holistic development, nurturing not only cognitive growth but also emotional and social skills. Montessori education uniquely fosters problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration, empowering children with the confidence to navigate the complexities of life.

Now, let’s explore how these principles come to life through an annual field trip—our apple-picking adventure at Watson Farm.

Let’s Go on a Field Trip – Annual Apple Picking at Watson Farm

The apple-picking trip to Watson Farm is much more than a fun day out—it’s a hands-on learning experience that fully embodies the Montessori philosophy.

Montessori education is deeply rooted in real-world experiences that connect children to their surroundings, and this outing perfectly captures that essence. At Watson Farm, students weren’t just passive observers. They fully engaged with their environment by touching and picking apples, breathing in the fresh autumn air, tasting the fruits they harvested, and observing the natural processes around them. This multi-sensory approach to learning nurtures a deep connection with the natural world, helping children understand where their food comes from and the effort required to grow it.

These field trips are directly aligned with Montessori’s core principles of independence, exploration, and active engagement. In the orchard, children take an active role, practicing life skills like selecting and gathering apples. These experiences foster an appreciation for nature, seasonal cycles, and life processes, creating meaningful connections between classroom learning and the world beyond.

Additionally, these outings offer valuable opportunities for social learning. As children work together, share their findings, and solve problems collaboratively, they experience the social cooperation and mutual respect emphasized in Montessori education. This builds a sense of community and belonging, encouraging children to learn from one another and respect their peers.

Ultimately, the trip to Watson Farm goes beyond a typical school excursion—it’s a true extension of the Montessori classroom. It brings the principles of curiosity, independence, and hands-on learning into the real world. Experiences like these highlights how Montessori education transcends traditional classroom boundaries, offering children rich, immersive lessons that deepen their understanding of the world around them. Through these vibrant, real-world experiences, Montessori students gain practical knowledge and lifelong skills that will serve them well beyond their school years.

           Montessori Routine and Discipline

: Nurturing Independence with Respect and Structure

In the Montessori approach, routine and discipline are essential pillars that support the development of independence, self-regulation, and mutual respect. By providing structure alongside freedom, Montessori environments create spaces where children feel secure and confident to explore, while learning to make responsible choices. Montessori discipline is built around guiding children rather than controlling them, helping them internalize positive behavior through understanding, not through external rewards or punishments.

The Role of Routine in a Montessori Classroom:

Routine is the foundation of a Montessori classroom, creating a rhythm that helps children feel grounded and focused. The day is thoughtfully organized with a balanced flow of activities that respect each child’s developmental needs. Uninterrupted work periods allow children the freedom to choose tasks that interest them, encouraging deep concentration and intrinsic motivation. This autonomy within a predictable schedule fosters time management, decision-making, and a natural sense of responsibility.

Daily routines typically include periods of independent work, group lessons, social interaction, and moments for rest and reflection. This harmonious structure helps children develop an internal sense of time and order, providing them with the stability they need to thrive cognitively, socially, and emotionally. The consistent rhythm reassures children, giving them the confidence to take on new challenges while offering the flexibility to adapt as needed.

           Montessori Discipline:

           Freedom Within Limits

Discipline in the Montessori philosophy is not synonymous with punishment or control. Instead, it revolves around setting clear, consistent boundaries that promote freedom within a safe, respectful framework. Montessori discipline focuses on teaching children the natural consequences of their actions, allowing them to learn through experience and reflection. Rather than imposing rigid rules, teachers model empathy, respect, and conflict resolution, guiding children in making thoughtful, positive choices.

Children in Montessori environments are encouraged to take ownership of their actions, understanding how their behavior impacts others and their surroundings. By providing freedom within established limits, teachers help children develop self-discipline. This process allows them to build a deeper sense of respect for themselves, their peers, and their environment.

           Fostering Confident, Compassionate Individuals

Through the balance of routine and discipline, Montessori education nurtures the development of confident, independent, and compassionate individuals. Children learn not only to regulate their own behavior but also to contribute positively to their community. The emphasis on personal responsibility and respect helps foster a deep, intrinsic motivation to make good choices, leading to lifelong skills of self-discipline, empathy, and cooperation.

This approach to routine and discipline offers children the tools to navigate their world with confidence and grace, equipping them for success both inside and outside the classroom.

A Day in the Life of a Montessori Child

Have you ever been curious about what a day in a Montessori classroom looks like for a child? Montessori education is renowned for its distinctive approach to learning, which places a strong emphasis on independence, self-direction, and immersive engagement with the environment. To truly understand how these principles are woven into everyday experiences, let’s explore a typical day in the life of a Montessori child and see how the unique elements of this educational philosophy come to life throughout their routine.

           Daily routine in points:

           •	Morning Arrival: Welcoming Independence

The day in a Montessori classroom begins with a warm welcome from the teachers as children arrive. Each child is encouraged to take an active role in managing their personal belongings, carefully placing their items in designated areas. This simple yet important routine not only helps to instill organizational skills but also fosters a sense of responsibility and independence from the very start of the day. After getting settled, children are given the freedom to choose their activities. This autonomy allows them to kick off their day with tasks that genuinely interest them, nurturing a profound sense of ownership over their learning journey. Whether they are exploring engaging Montessori materials, immersing themselves in a book, or indulging in creative play, each child begins their day in a way that aligns with their individual interests and developmental needs. This personalized approach ensures that their learning experience is both meaningful and tailored to their unique growth.

           •	AM Snack and Social Time: Building Community

As the morning work period comes to an end, children gather for a snack and social time. This break is much more than just a chance to eat; it's a valuable opportunity for children to practice social skills, engage in meaningful conversations, and enjoy the company of their peers. The Montessori philosophy places a strong emphasis on respect and cooperation, and this time helps children build robust interpersonal relationships and develop their social skills in a supportive environment. During snack time, children are actively involved in the preparation and clean-up processes. They might assist in setting up the snack area, serving food, or tidying up afterward. This involvement not only reinforces practical life skills but also fosters a sense of community within the classroom. By participating in these tasks, children learn the importance of contributing to their environment and working collaboratively, which enhances their understanding of responsibility and teamwork.

           •	Outdoor Play/ Recess: Connecting with Nature and soundings

Outdoor activities are a fundamental component of the Montessori curriculum, offering children vital opportunities for physical exercise, exploration, and a deeper connection with the natural world. Whether they are running, climbing, gardening, or engaging in imaginative play, children benefit from the freedom to move and interact with their environment.

Outdoor play is more than just a break from the classroom; it plays a crucial role in promoting gross motor development. This time allows children to release their energy, enhance their coordination, and develop important physical skills. Additionally, it provides a refreshing contrast to indoor activities, giving children a chance to enjoy the outdoors, experience the changing seasons, and engage in activities that stimulate their senses and creativity.

           •	Lunch and Rest: Nourishing the Body and Mind

After outdoor play, the children gather for lunch, a significant part of the day in the Montessori environment. During this time, children are encouraged to practice good manners and take an active role in setting the table, serving meals, and assisting with clean-up afterward. This participation not only strengthens practical life skills but also fosters a sense of responsibility and teamwork. Eating together helps build a sense of community as children engage in conversations, further developing their social connections and communication abilities.

Following lunch, the day transitions into a period of rest and relaxation. Younger children may take a nap or have quiet time to recharge, while older children engage in calming activities such as reading, drawing, or working on individual projects. This rest period is crucial for both physical and mental refreshment, allowing children to process the morning's activities, reflect on their learning, and recharge in preparation for the remainder of the day.

           •	Afternoon Work Period/ work cycle: Continuing the Journey

The afternoon work period closely resembles the morning session, providing additional time for children to delve into Montessori materials and pursue self-directed learning. This segment of the day can encompass a variety of activities, such as engaging in special projects, participating in group tasks, or focusing on individual interests, all tailored to meet the children’s evolving needs and preferences. During this time, teachers remain actively involved, offering guidance, introducing new concepts, and inspiring children to explore their chosen activities more deeply. The flexible nature of the Montessori schedule supports ongoing exploration and growth, allowing children to build on their morning experiences and continue their learning journey at their own pace. This structure ensures that each child can fully engage with their interests and develop their skills in a supportive, dynamic environment.

           •	Departure: Leaving with a Sense of Accomplishment

At the end of the day, children gather their belongings and say their goodbyes to friends and teachers. They leave with a sense of accomplishment, having spent the day immersed in meaningful activities, fostering independence, and strengthening connections with their peers.

In a Montessori classroom, each day is a journey of discovery, growth, and learning. Rooted in the principles of self-direction, respect, and hands-on engagement, Montessori education creates a nurturing environment where children can flourish both academically and socially. As we've seen, a typical day in the life of a Montessori child is filled with opportunities for exploration, independence, and personal development, laying the foundation for a lifelong passion for learning.

            Choosing A Montessori School

I know that you have come to the right place by potentially choosing DMS Montessori Preschool and Daycare for your early childhood education. But do you? Choosing the "right" Montessori school for your infant, toddler or preschooler can be a real challenge. "Montessori" is not a trademarked name, and so anyone can use the name in their school title. Montessori in the name does not mean that it is a Montessori school in the traditional sense. If you want an authentic experience, as Maria Montessori created and intended it to be, it is important to know the following before choosing the "one."

There are certain trademarks and qualifications to look for in a classroom.

There is of course no one size fits all, but in general, here are the attributes to look for when choosing a Montessori program no matter what the age of the child:

           Parents’ Instincts

            - This is the most important when it comes to childcare in general. Do you get a good feel for the place and from the teacher(s)? Do you sense a positive energy, happy children, and peaceful adults? Is the school clean and orderly? Montessori or not, you need to feel comfortable and safe leaving your child here.

           Teaching Style

            - How does the teacher talk to the children? Montessori teachers are typically wonderful at communicating with the age group they are working with. Do they get down to the child’s level and speak to them with respect? Do they pause and listen to what the child has to say? Conversely, I would avoid schools and teachers that use rewards or punishments, or label children good or bad. This is a red flag no matter what childcare centre you explore.

           Montessori Trained Teachers

            - If you want a true Montessori experience, this is very important. Either MACTE or AMI are the main two to look for. There should always be a RECE in each classroom with the Montessori teacher to ensure they are following the rules as they pertain to the Ministry of Education. The Montessori teacher will typically be the lead in the classroom to drive the Montessori programming.

           Mixed-Age Classroom

            - Montessori classrooms have a wider age range in each class than is typical in other schools. An infant room class goes from 0-18 months. A toddler class usually goes from 18 months to 2.5 / 3 years. A primary class / preschool class goes from 2.5 / 3 to 6 years (includes what would typically be kindergarten year/s). One of the wonderful things about mixed-age classrooms is that the younger students learn from the older ones, and the older students learn to teach the younger ones. It is so valuable for young children to have this experience, as well as consistency that spans across years.

           Layout

            - Take a look at the classroom, or a few, and note how the room is organized. Is it clean, orderly, and spacious? Montessori classrooms should be inviting for the child, with shelves of organized trays and baskets and plenty of floor space and tables to work at. The furniture should be made of wood, with plenty of natural materials on the shelves. Montessori classrooms are typically not as bright, loud, and overstimulating as many other kinds of preschools or regular daycare spaces. This is why it is often the perfect experience for children with special needs.

           Self-directed play

            - If you are able, observe in the prospective classroom. Watch how the children interact with the materials, each other, and the teachers. Children in a Montessori classroom should be allowed to choose their own work, focus on it, and seek help when needed. Other children might be playing with friends or working alongside one another. Teachers come over to children one-by-one rather than talking over them. There should be a fairly long work cycle for self-directed play, in addition to time outdoors and time together for songs and meals.

            Teacher Turnover Rate

           - Not specific to Montessori, but I always like to look at how long teachers have worked at the school. It’s normal and common for there to be some turnover, and for teachers to leave but it may be a red flag if there is frequent teacher turnover at the school, especially mid-year. Children do best at schools that teachers enjoy teaching at. In order to build close and comfortable relationships, Montessori children tend to stay with the same Montessori teacher for years.

Most Montessori schools do not offer part-time schedules. This is because children thrive on consistency and routine. However, they do exist and some schools offer flexibility based on many factors. The best way to ensure consistency with the Montessori program while at home if she or he is part time at school is to try to do Montessori at home too. Talk to the teachers about their willingness to offer suggestions about what you can do at home to ensure stability and consistency with their school. Toddlers tend to thrive best in a full time program especially since there is already so much separation anxiety involved in their current developmental stage. It can be really challenging for toddlers who have different rules and routines at home to then have to “re-learn” the routine at school each week for the two days they attend. It can also be difficult for a Montessori program to afford such part-time options. I hope that helps you understand why Montessori schools often insist on 4-5 day programs, as well as the importance of consistency for small children. For now, we do accept part time children for 3 days a week, but that may change in the future for the reasons above. I feel like parents sometimes have help from involved grandparents or they work from home and so a part time schedule fits their needs. As usual, I try to work WITH the parents and their needs rather than not being flexible for my families.

Some parents do not like messy play in the home. That is ok if this is how you feel! Why? not try water activities and messy play in the bathtub!? Adding a special activity to bath time can also get you through bath time hurdles when your child has suddenly decided they don't want to bathe anymore, or they decide to fight you to take a bath in the first place!

Here are some ideas to make bath time fun while promoting Montessori practical life learning at the same time! These are bath activities that are also great for sensory exploration AND they keep the mess contained!

           Pouring Activities

Pouring is a core Montessori activity for young children but it can get a little messy when your child is first practicing. If you want to avoid the clean up, you can do this activity in the bath or outside.

Just bring 2 stainless steel or plastic jugs in the bath so you don't have to worry about broken glass.

Other toys & tools that would also teach water transfer and develop fine motor skills are watering cans, eyedroppers, funnels, or regular cups from your kitchen cabinets.

           Making Bubbles

Add your bubble bath AFTER the tub is filled and the tap is off. Then use a whisk or your hands to make suds. This is a fun gross motor activity to help children understand cause and effect - I move and the bubbles form. We have an activity like this that we do in the classroom too! Of course it can get a bit messy, but we don't mind! We call it "whisking."

           Bathing the Baby

Bring dirty toys, a brush or sponge, and soap into the tub to get them clean. Most children enjoy the satisfaction of cleaning their toys and seeing the before and after. Some children love the role play of washing their own baby doll and pretending to give the doll a bath! You can even introduce a wash cloth and show your child how to wash the doll like you are washing your child! In this activity you are teaching what we call, "self-care" and you can teach body parts while you are at it!

This one will likely require you to fill the tub twice since the water will be all dirty after you wash the toys.

If you don't want to fill the tub twice, you can wash the toys in a small basin in the tub to contain the mess and then do bath time after.

           Painting The Tub

They carry washable tub paint and crayons made for the bath tub at the toys store. You can use those or just use some washable paint and let your child paint the inside of the tub, either with paintbrushes or their fingers. The child can practice their name, name recognition, draw, doodle - the possibilities are endless!

It's such a fun sensory activity and you can practice clean up of the tub once you're all done.

           Sink or Float?

Do a science experiment to test out different objects or toys to see which will they sink and which will float.

This is so easy and you can do it with virtually anything. This is one of my absolute favorite topics to teach.

I do this all the time with my children. It's fun to do in the sink, bath tub, or a kiddie pool during outside playtime.

           Sponge Play

Strengthen the hand by squeezing a big sponge, filling it with water, and then wringing it out again. You can add bubbles and they will get foamier as your child squeezes, teaching cause and effect.

You can also wash the walls with your foamy sponge, a great activity to do after painting the walls - yet another practical life activity at the tip of your fingers!

           Spray Bottle

What child doesn't love to use water pistols or spray bottles? Either outside to spray flowers / water flowers in the garden, or to use in the bath tub, children love to use spray bottles. The child has to exercise their gross motor by squeezing the handle to expel the water which is great in itself. They can spray themselves, an item / toy floating in the water, whatever they desire! You can also colour the water in the spray bottle with some of colourful bath tablets for extra fun!

           Foam Toy Fun

If you have foam toys (shapes, letters, puzzles), they’ll stick to the walls when wet.

These are great because they don't take up a lot of space in your bathtub and they can be put away for a bit when your child gets bored of them. Of course, it provides a variety of learning opportunity!

The best thing about any of these activities is that the child thoroughly enjoys these activities and is learning at the same time.

           Fostering Independence

I often get asked the question, "How do you foster independence in Montessori?"

If I gave you a pair of ice skates and told you to start skating even though you've never tried before, you'd probably have a tough time standing on the ice, let alone skating on your first attempt.

This is what it can feel like to our children when we offer them activities that are not developmentally appropriate.

Dr. Montessori said to...

           Follow The Child.

The easiest way to foster independent play and focus is to offer activities that your child is truly interested in and at the right skill level for them.

When we choose activities or toys that are too hard, too easy, or are unrelated to the skills they're currently working on building, it's very likely to be an unsuccessful attempt.

The children will most likely have little interest and walk away from it pretty quickly.

Giving activities that are too challenging for the child doesn't hold their interest too long. If the child is interested in an activity AND it is developmentally appropriate / at the child's current level, you'll likely see repetitive usage and interest which is exactly what we want.

Knowing that the child has been actively working with an activity of interest, you can then offer another activity with an added challenge. For example, introducing a year old infant the object permanence box first, then introducing the one that has a drawer that opens and closes! This is just the right amount of new challenge. It again, fully engages the child and also builds on their problem solving skills.

You can easily figure out what will engage your child simply by observing them. This is one of the key jobs of a Montessori teacher in the classroom.

Teachers spend time observing each child to ensure they have access to new activities that are the right fit. They introduce appropriate next-step activities according to many things including their capabilities with the first activities in the sequence.

Parents can ask the following questions at home:

What is my child drawn to?

It is certain types of movement, gross motor or fine motor (i.e. nesting one object in another, throwing, building, climbing)?

What are they immediately drawn to in a space (both a play area or any area of the home?)

What do they tend to repeat over and over?

Once you figure that out, independent play will come so much easier.

Between social media and resuming of normal, in-person get togethers with other parents, it can be so tempting to compare our children. Parents need to understand that each child is an individual and progresses at their own rate. Try to follow your child and their own capabilities. Comparing to other children and their skills at the same age may make us push our child harder or too soon. It's a common mistake that can do your child a disservice. They will gain the same skills when they are ready - I promise! By building on the skills and interests of your own unique child, you'll foster a deep love of learning, along with more focused, independent play.

Oh me oh my! Can you believe that we ended the calendar year already? We will soon be ringing in the new year and boy, things are getting exciting in the DMS Montessori Preschool and Daycare Community!

Programming was wonderful this past month as the children thoroughly enjoyed the holiday cheer with all music and movement activities in December focusing on performing in their holiday concert! The children performed virtually for their parents and the 45 minute concert was a hit! Parents enjoyed watching them perform songs and dance to holiday music while showcasing their talent and some of what they've learned so far this school year! We baked cookies together (Montessori practical life), we went caroling in the neighborhood, and Santa visited our school!

From fun practical life holiday themed activities and crafts, to lots of fun in the snow, we always enjoy our time together at DMS Montessori!

On the expansion front, we were able to complete a lot of work at the new location in December! The holidays certainly impacted our opening target of January 3 and caused further delays. BUT, things always go as they are supposed to in life - Mrs. Dina believes that! And so we continue to think positively about the trades coming back from vacation rested and that their delayed orders come in sooner than later! The impact from COVID is felt across the board from the soaring cost of supplies to trades getting sick with COVID, to the incredible delays in receiving ordered and special ordered childcare related and trades related materials. It has been a learning process to say the least! I am a patient person, but I am facing a fully enrolled opening so the last thing I want is to disappoint my families and staff with yet another delay.

Happy holidays and warm wishes from my family to yours!

This month, on top of the work getting done at the new location and preparing for the bulk of renovations, we've continued with our wonderful DMS Montessori Programming. We learned about Remembrance Day and started practicing for our Christmas/Holiday concert! Once again, we plan to do the concert virtually due to the pandemic. So I will give a copy of the video to each parent with their child's gift!

We also continue to keep our children/families safe by doing our part during this pandemic. Our COVID policies are being adhered to, and we are all doing great with our pre-screenings, temperature checks and frequent health updates. Thank you to all parents who are doing a fantastic job at cooperating with us and adhering to our strict policies.

Well, things have been busy at DMS Montessori Preschool and Daycare Inc.! We have been preparing for renovations through architect and engineer work, city approvals and outside site work completion before the winter begins! I am happy to report that things are rolling along well thus far and we hope that this can continue throughout the preparation time until we open!

This month's blog is about how thankful I am for my life and those around me. You wonderful humans in my community and every one in the DMS Montessori Preschool and Daycare Inc. community.

Mrs. Dina has been busy continuing to operate her current location while project managing this huge endeavor. People ask me how I am doing it - it is not easy! But this busy time in my life has taught me a lot and a lot about myself. One thing is that I CAN DO HARD THINGS! I am also an excellent multitasker, organizer and much more. Hard work and dedication are definitely at play but also, working toward your dream is an incredible feeling. And I am doing it! I was courageous and made it happen. I work around the clock but when you are living your passion each day, it sort of doesn't feel like "work" ... can you relate?

I hope I inspire my own children, my "childcare children" and all women and young girls everywhere what you CAN do when you put your heart, soul and mind to it. Capabilities and possibilities are endless. You can definitely achieve all of your dreams with some "will and determination, and Grace, too." (The Tragically Hip - my favorite quote and band)

So this past month has made me feel extra grateful around Thanksgiving and as I face a challenging road ahead I continue to give my 100+% to my current families and their children, work hard on the side to do what I need to do to hire some quality staff, to educate and promote the Montessori method, and try to get some sleep somewhere too! I am humble and thankful for my circle of supportive friends, my network of connections, tradesmen who are dedicated to my project, and my current and future families who bless me with their children each day. I am so incredibly grateful that I have a family and my husband who unwaveringly supports my goals and dreams.

In this lifetime, we need to do what makes ourselves and family fulfilled and happy...yes, even if you do so during a pandemic! For me, it's making a significant difference in the community and in children/families lives by providing them with the best experience possible in their Early Years that will set the foundation for the rest of their lives.

September 2021 In Review

         September Surprise!

I signed the lease! I am so excited to announce our new location for January 2022 will be at 101 Simcoe Street North in Oshawa! I have some exciting plans to execute and I cannot wait to keep you posted along the way! Now enrolling for January 2022! Let the extra BUSY begin!

We had a lot of fun in September! We went to the apple orchard to apple pick and support our apple theme. We noticed many different types of apples and analyzed the parts of the apple as we enjoyed eating them in class. We were able to learn in real life how the apple grows and where. We learned about the parts of the apple, apple life cycle, did apple crafts and art. We learned a song about the parts of the apple which the children love to sing every day!

Of course, phonics is heavily emphasized every day as usual. The letter A was a big focus this month.

My family and I would like to thank you all for your follows, your support and your community connection. Without you, growth would not be possible. Your recognition of our unique and heart-full program is not going unnoticed. We will always lead with a pure heart and soul in providing the BEST early learning experience for your child.

Regards,

EXCITING NEWS FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR!

WE ARE EXPANDING AND MOVING LOCATIONS IN JANUARY 2022!

I signed a lease for a charming and unique property in central Oshawa! I am very excited and so is our DMS Montessori Preschool and Daycare Inc. community! This endeavor has been a dream of mine to achieve for most of my adult life. I always knew teaching was in my blood, but this just fulfills my ultimate goals of opening my own Montessori preschool and making a difference in our community and in the lives of many beautiful children! I want the children who’s lives I / we touch to go on and lead the most fulfilling lives possible because I provide them with the most optimal preschool experience possible to expand their horizons and open them up to the wonders of the World. The capacity for growth in all areas of development is massive at the early childhood level. All these children need is the experiences and opportunities to reach their maximum potential at this level.

I know that I have made a difference in these tiny human’s lives over the last five years, both through who I am as a person, my values and genuine passion for children and their development, and through my relationship and undying desire to provide only the best to parents and children, but now I want to give that same top-quality care to more children whose parents are waiting for this new step of growth. With over 30 families on my current waiting list, the time for me to make this expansion happen is NOW!

I take possession on September 1, 2021. Grand opening is slated for January 3, 2022, if all renovations and licensing preparations go according to plan over the next few months.

I shall surely keep you posted on all developments so stay tuned!

Voting round is almost over but there’s still time to vote for us! Durham Reader’s Choice Awards Whitby/Oshawa, DMS Montessori Preschool and Daycare Inc. for best daycare, nursery school and private school. Help us win this again!

I cannot believe that another school year has come to an end!

June was a busy month but an incredibly good one, as usual! Our highlights included receiving our live larvae to support our life cycle of a butterfly theme, CASA graduation and year end report cards!

Just like the butterfly changing over the course of their cycle before ready for emergence, so are our three of our beautiful children ready to move forward after graduating from DMS Montessori Preschool and Daycare Inc! What a fantastic time we have had together over the last few years! April-Jane moves onto SK in September after three and a half years, Matteo moves onto SK after two and a half years, and Alice moves onto JK after two years. I am so proud of each of them and the children they are today. We had an intimate ceremony for them at the end of June. I am excited to see these children grow into their future which looks promising! These children, like all in our care, have received a solid foundation to prepare them for all areas of life, not just academically. I am personally so grateful to their parents for choosing me, trusting me, supporting my program and for the relationship we have had since day one. Thank you to all parents for the same.

We studied each step of the butterfly life cycle and look forward to releasing our butterflies early July! We watched them change before our eyes, starting from the larvae stage all the way through the chrysalis stage to the emergence of beautiful Painted Lady butterflies! Children are always excited and amazed throughout their experience working with real life nature in their own classroom! It provides concrete learning experiences which aids in retention and deep understanding of what they learn.

         May in Review

As we start the month of June, the last month of the school year, we reflect on the month of May and cannot help but think, “where did the month go?” May was filled with our usual fun as well as a mixed bag of treats weather wise! We enjoyed some summer-like weather with many days of outdoor water activities and play, as well as some wet rainy days that allowed for some nice walks in the light rain, worm-finding fun and discussions around rain formation and Spring weather variances. There is nothing more fun on a rainy day than jumping in puddles!

In May we learned about construction and gardening! For our construction theme we focused on power tools and construction machines. We played fun games like, name that power tool where I played an audio example of various tools and the children guessed what they are! Also, we saw real power tools to learn about their names through three-period lessons. And of course, the children practiced using a real hammer! We talked about the different structures that could be built by construction workers. We played dress up and played with construction related toys out in the sand and dirt! Oh, do the children ever love digging in the mud and dirt!

For our gardening theme, we planted cucumbers and flowers in our garden. We learned about what can be planted in a garden, how to take care of flowers, plants, fruits and veggies and what such things need to survive. We continue to water our garden every day and we cannot wait to see our veggies and flowers sprout and grow! We learned about the parts of the flower. We let our creativity bloom as we and made beautiful Mother’s Day crafts surrounding the garden theme in May.

In May we celebrated our favorite Golden Retriever dog’s birthday! Cooper turned six years old, and we had a cute little backyard birthday for him – each child fed him a mini dog treat and Cooper loved every minute of the attention!

           Have a wonderful June, friends!

EXPLORATION: SPACE! Another OUT OF THIS WORLD month!

Where did the month of April go? Time flies when you are having fun! And fun is what we have at DMS Montessori Preschool and Daycare Inc. every day!

The month began with Easter. The practical life activities were changed to reflect the season of Spring and Easter, with activities containing bright colors, bunnies, and interesting eggs throughout the month of April. If children are provided with attractive activities that hold their interest they will concentrate much more on their work. Our practical life activities maintain interest with beautiful and creative practical life contents with each new month that passes! We had a huge Easter egg hunt in the classroom and counted all our eggs...and got to bring home some special treats!

This month we also celebrated Travis’ and Reese’s 2nd birthday DMS Montessori Preschool and Daycare Inc. style with a pizza lunch and dance party! We always have fun celebrating birthdays and we ensure each child who celebrates gets special attention throughout their day. Of course, the birthday child also experiences opening a special gift from Mrs. Dina!

We thoroughly enjoyed learning all about space and the solar system for the last two weeks of April. This theme is always a class favorite! We “explored” the solar system by learning about the planets, and the sun. We learned the order of the planets and their names, and put our new knowledge to practice by creating a solar system mobile. We used out motor skills, cutting skills and gluing abilities to create this mobile. We read books and sang songs. We also made a space craft with an astronaut! We learned about Earth day and discussed ways to help our planet. We usually go around the neighborhood to pick up litter on Earth day every year, but this year we decided against it due to the pandemic for obvious reasons!

We learned new vocabulary such as “orbit” and “revolve” when talking about how the Earth and other planets go around the sun. Every time we celebrate a birthday, we sing our “Earth goes around the sun” song, and with such, we made more connections by singing it while moving the Earth solar system model around the sun. We always make connections to events and other things we learn in the classroom like day/month/year (you have gone around the sun one time when you had birthday) when reviewing and learning about our themes.

We had so much fun taking a huge balloon rocket to the park for a launch! The children enjoyed trying to chase it (great exercise) upon arrival back to Earth (lol) and loved counting down before launching it into the sky!

We said goodbye to our full-timer Matteo this month who blessed us with his presence for almost three years! Matteo is off to SK in September. We will celebrate his graduation in June virtually. We wish him and his family all the best! As usually, it is not goodbye but a “see you later!”

March came and went quickly! We had a wonderful and fun-filled month. We celebrated Mrs. Dina’s birthday (me) and we celebrated Elisha’s 2nd birthday! We had fun with St. Patrick’s Day crafts and activities, we learned the word, “femme,” in French because of International Women’s Day earlier this month.

All our families are doing a wonderful job at keeping each other safe and well through following all our COVID-19 precautions. I am incredibly pleased with our community and the efforts in contributing to their individual safety as well as the greater good of all our families. We ensure that we are deep cleaning our childcare facility every night so that your child is safe. Our handwashing routines have increased and the changes we have made according to the Ministry of Health are certainly working in keeping our environment under control.

         February Fun!

February went by quickly! But they do say that “time flies when you’re having fun!” We certainly enjoyed our time together in February!

The Montessori practical life activities were changed to red and pink this month! In French we learned about the word, “l’amour.” We used our fine motor skills to create fun crafts for Valentine’s Day.

Our main theme throughout the month of February was World Cultures. For this unit we dove deeper into information pertaining to countries found on the continents learned about in January. We also studied each of our own students’ cultural backgrounds and found our parents’ countries of origin on the map!

We had cultural dress up days where children dressed up in clothing that represented their cultural backgrounds and we carefully handled some items that are native to their cultures too.

Discussions around foods that are popular to different cultures are always interesting, and I attempted (and succeeded) to cook a variety of culturally specific meals each day that represented these cultures of the world. It certainly was an interesting and different meal plan and the children enjoyed the excitement around learning about each meal.

We tied the Family Day holiday into everything by discussing love for ourselves, our family members, how families celebrate holidays differently across different cultures, and more, and we contributed to our class Gratitude Jar.

We celebrated April-Jane’s 5th birthday this month which of course included a pizza lunch, dance party, the Montessori “Earth around the Sun” acknowledgement in circle time and other DMS Montessori specially organized activities for April-Jane’s special day!

Finally, we welcomed our new friend, Reese, to DMS Montessori Preschool and Daycare Inc!

         Happy New Year!

January was a month full of Worldly discovery! We completed the continents and Canada units which are always class favorites. Our children sing “Oh, Canada!” daily, sing the “7 continents” song and more. Through these units, children learn that more exists than the world they know in their home and preschool.

We concretely explored each continent through the Montessori culture activities and puzzles, and other supporting materials to ensure understanding. Children can successfully name each continent, and some can identify them accurately on a map and globe. We also learned about what animals we can find on each continent! Of course, as we go along in the school year, we make references to units we learned about since the beginning of our school year. For example, we review of our land, air and water unit by connecting the continents to land, the water to the oceans of the World and air all is all around us. We do this during outside play and on walks also. It is the same way when we learned about trees in the Fall. Each opportunity we get to allow the children to touch and point to the parts of the tree reinforces lessons learned in the classroom. That is the beautiful thing about Montessori. We believe in real experiences and using nature to learn whenever possible. There is so much opportunity around us to encourage and review everything we learn and relate it to the real World – we just need to be aware and put effort into making such connections with our children.

By the end of the continents and Canada units, children understand that we live in Ontario, a province in Canada, which is a country in North America! Through further analyzing maps, discussions and fun songs about Canada, North America and the World, Children receive a strong foundation in understanding that we are just a small part of this big world around us.

         JOY TO THE WORLD!

December was an exciting month! The children enjoyed all our Christmas crafts, reading Christmas themed books, participating in group activities and of course using the Christmas themed Montessori Practical Life activities during the Montessori work cycles. Our school was decorated festively, we trimmed our class tree and enjoyed listened to many Christmas carols.

We learned a bit about Kwanzaa, Hanukkah and Christmas this month and did crafts and activities to support and ensure understanding of key elements of these festive holidays.

We enjoyed two cozy pajama days and read stories by the wood-burning fireplace! I took the children caroling in the neighborhood which was a truly special event. The neighbors were blown away by the children and their performance of singing Jingle Bells, while shaking percussion instruments (bells) and wearing Santa hats!

We had many discussions this month about the season of giving and how it is more important to experience the joy in giving rather than receiving. There was emphasis placed on giving through the class Kris Kringle experience. And as a regular and consistent focus, a huge emphasis was placed on feelings of happiness, gratefulness, manners, grace and courtesy.

Our annual Christmas shutdown allowed for a week of relaxation and family time for all. Season’s Greetings, Merry Christmas and best wishes for 2021!

         THE VOTES ARE IN!

THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for voting for us! DMS Montessori Preschool and Daycare Inc. was voted number one, diamond winner, in all three categories! We won the award for Best Nursery School, Best Daycare/Childcare AND Best Private School!

It is hard to believe that we have completed another month of school and that November is behind us already.

We learned about the Poppy and Remembrance Day earlier this month among other themes. The children loved hearing poems and reading books about why we celebrate this special day.

Christmas is around the corner! With the pandemic preventing us from celebrating our annual Christmas concert in person, I have decided to create a movie for all parents and students to enjoy! Planning and rehearsing for this project has begun, and I am excited to see what December brings!

We had a wonderful fun-filled October

Get your votes in! The Durham Reader’s Choice Awards voting process is now closed! Thank you for your votes! We have been nominated in three categories under professional services: Nursery School, Private School and Daycare/Childcare. Wish us luck!

We had a wonderful and fun-filled October!

The Montessori Practical Life activities have been changed up to reflect the season of fall and Halloween colors! Changing Montessori Practical Life activities to reflect broad themes helps to peak and maintain a high level of interest and fun for the children. It is as simple as changing out rice in the “spooning” activity to black and orange beads.

Thanksgiving is always a great opportunity to reinforce kindness to all and to truly reflect about what we are thankful for. This month, we created a “Thankful Tree” for our classroom. We collected real branches and leaves outside and brought them inside to add to our tree. We traced our hands and wrote what we are thankful for on each cut-

out. Through much discussion, it was beautiful to hear the children saying that they are thankful for such things as their family, friends, brothers and sisters…and even Mrs.
Dina!

We learned about the life cycle of a pumpkin this month! The children can tell you all about the pumpkin, how and where pumpkins grow. We went on a field trip to the pumpkin patch to choose a pumpkin. We carved a class pumpkin and they each got to take a pumpkin home!

Lastly, what is Halloween without dressing up in our favorite costume? We certainly enjoyed our class dress up Halloween dance party and the many crafts and activities that supported the fall and Halloween themes this month.

September 2020 in Review : Welcome Back

This month we welcomed back our full-timers, part-timers and had some new friends join us! Welcome to DMS Montessori Preschool and Daycare Inc. Elisha and Ardaya! We also welcomed Eliana, our part-time volunteer. Two of our students, April-Jane and Matteo, stayed with us instead of heading off to JK which is quite exciting! Their senior CASA experience continues!

We have established and reviewed classroom routines and kicked off the new year with a new start to our programming. We were able to enjoy a lot of outdoor time in September thanks to the lovely weather! As usual, we took classroom learning into real life experiences in nature and supported our Apple Unit with a trip to the Apple Orchard for apple picking. We learned about the life cycle of an apple, the parts of the apple and what apple trees need to grow. Through songs, jingles, books, discussion and more, we were able to make connections to gain a solid and age-appropriate understanding of topics learned. We aim to take learning outside at every opportunity, and so we took story time, circle time and sensory activities outside almost every day in September.

Alice mastered how to independently zip a zipper this month! Our before and after school SK child, Kacey, mastered how to spell her last name in only a month of being with us! Luke, JK before and after school child, mastered how to write his own name! With solid COVID-19 precautions in place, we have adjusted well to a new reality of day-to-day life. We have collectively ensured the children’s safety through effective and transparent communication and strict compliance regarding policies and symptoms of illness by all parents and staff. Thank you for your ongoing support and cooperation!
